The pyramid-shaped structure in the background was Switzerland’s tallest building before it was joined by a second even-higher adjacent tower overlooking the city-village of Basel. Today they create a skyline signature of F. Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd, the company that employed the author for 35 years. An unnamed ferryman took his picture as he floated across the Rhine on the riverbank where the company was founded in October 1896.
